In researching my family tree, I came across fairly extensive documentation about the life of my 3rd great-grandfather, Jeremiah Ritch, and felt it was important to pull all the pieces together for my children as well as people who may be curious about 19th century life.  As a Confederate military officer, merchant in Athens, GA and intendant of Athens before its transition to a city-county government, he seems to have led an ordinary life full of experiences that tell stories of the time.

Many of the events in which he participated are documented in the local newspapers: The Athens Banner-Herald and The Southern Watchman.  I’ve referenced articles whenever possible and encourage interested readers to visit the linked source pages, as they contain news and advertisements in much the same way modern newspapers and digital media mixes content today.
